A rewarding career!

I feel very much led to share with you one case that tremendously
blessed me. It delighted my heart, and I won’t forget it. On one afternoon, I and a few other student interns were in the ER in a district hospital in a remote area and a quiet young adult, in his mid twenties, got in the room
with his mom.

They were brought to the hospital in the ambulance but we hadn’t noticed that. The doctor was away so we went to pick up a patient’s file to fill in all the information and take the vital signs. By the time I came back where I left him on a bed, I found out that he has climbed and was standing on the bed. By asking him a question, it dawned on me that he had psychosis (a mental disease), he was saying irrelevant things, he mentioned some stuff pertaining to God and misquoted bible verses and it was very much difficult to collaborate with him. Fortunately, I got most of the information from his mom.

We called the doctor who was away in another department and he prescribed some drugs in this patient’s file. This young man wouldn’t stay in one position for a minute. Through lots of efforts, I succeeded to administer two drugs, one intramuscularly and another via IV line. At this point, he calmed down. I began having a conversation with his mom and she was open enough to tell me everything.

The young man was a member of a choir and a faithful Christian in a Pentecostal church. That very day, the young man was admitted in the Internal medicine ward to be hospitalized (spending some time in a hospital because the doctors need to track down the progress of the patient). After working two weeks in the ER, I moved to work two weeks
in the Internal medicine and was able to see him every morning. Most of the time, he was always very weak and couldn’t respond or talk to me but I would always encourage his mom and made sure I addressed her concerns. His health kept improving progressively day after day. He was sober but very weak because of psychotic drugs he took every morning. I encouraged him using bible verses, and as his mom was by his side, he got inspired.

In our final days, we had an evaluation practical exam and had lots of reports to give. I was the leader of our team of student nurses. So I rarely went into the wards to see patients. One afternoon, as I was passing through the halls of the hospital I saw him sitting on a bench with a small mobile phone listening to gospel songs, he smiled and was excited to see me, as I approached he stood and we hugged. And he was very oriented, sober and eager to tell me that he was doing very well and told me all the things that happened to him before he came to hospital. I was very surprised to see him totally sane and was very much elated to be his friend. We talked for a while and told me that he wanted to go back home, and wanted his mom to take a rest as she did everything for him whilst they were at hospital. Deep inside, my heart was saying “Thank you Lord for your amazing work”. I just got a small glimpse at how rewarding and joyful it came be to work for the Lord in such a way.

Faith is not intelligent understanding, faith is deliberate commitment to a Person where I see no way.

Are you debating whether to take a step in faith in Jesus or to wait until you can see how to do the thing yourself? Obey Him with glad reckless joy. When He says something and you begin to debate, it is because you have a conception of His honour which is not His honour. Are you loyal to Jesus or loyal to your notion of Him? Are you loyal to what He says, or are you trying to compromise with conceptions which never came from Him? “Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it.”

Ambassadors of Christ

Actions speak louder than words. People won’t believe us when we talk about Christ’s good news if our lives don’t match all we say. The way we live our everyday life matters.

Matthew 5:13-16 KJV
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
