Jesus and the Sabbath!

“Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” – John‬ ‭7:21-24‬ ‭

It was the Sabbath, Jesus taught God’s truth, healed the sick, delivered the captive, and did the will of God. The sinful selfish jealous Pharisees who claimed to be men of God but were far from it, for they did what was right in their own eyes and pleasing to their own bellies rather then seeking God for His will and what was right in His eyes. These wolves in sheep’s clothing, burning with a demonic jealousy, sought to kill Jesus. Yet they knew they needed a reason to justify themselves in order to maintain the illusion that they were right. So they tried to discredit His teachings by trying to cause the people to question His works.

To do this, they attempted to use a law given by Moses that no man would work on the sabbath day, but would rather keep it Holy. Therefore, the Pharisees complained that Jesus’s teachings, healing, delivering, and so on was “works”, therefor He was working when God said not to work. Yet Jesus’s reply served to show them how little these self proclaiming “wise men” knew.

“…they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,” – Romans‬ ‭1:22‬

‭ Jesus explains that He was not preforming “works” which is to do the will and works of your own hands, but was rather being obedient to the will of God which is required to keep the day Holy. Something of which they knew little because they did not truly seek God, neither hear, nor obey Him. The Pharisees were walking in hypocritical self righteousness because they were proclaiming and doing what they thought to be right, but Jesus was walking in God’s righteousness because He was proclaiming and doing what God said was right.

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” – Matthew‬ ‭7:21‬

‭ “And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee …” – 1 Samuel‬ ‭15:22-23‬

‭ You see, the whole point of God enacting the law that no man should work on the Sabbath but keep it Holy, was so that all would remember to stop, lay down the will and works of their own hands and do God’s. Before the death of Christ, the Holy Spirit was not given unto all men and the presence of God only resided with in the temple. Therefore, it was commanded them to come and seek out God in the temple every Sabbath. To hear His teachings and commandments, to hear His priest and prophets, to be cleansed, and to do as He instructs. However, when Christ died, He made us all priest of God and sent the Holy Spirit of God to dwell within us, making us the temple of God! Therefore, we now longer wait until the sabbath to lay down the works of our own hands, go seek God in the temple, get cleansed, and do His Holy work, then leave and have to rinse and repeat a week later keeping only that day Holy. Rather, now God resides in the temple of our bodies that we might seek Him, hear from Him, lay down the will and works of our own hands, receive His instructions, obey His will, and walk in Holiness everyday!

“But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.” – Romans‬ ‭13:14‬ ‭

“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” – 1 Peter‬ ‭1:13-16‬

‭ “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” – Hebrews‬ ‭12:14‬ ‭

You see, before Christ when God only dwelt in the temple, we were instructed to remember the Sabbath day and keep it Holy. Now that God dwells in us, we are instructed to remember Him everyday, seek Him everyday, obey Him everyday, and keep everyday Holy.

“And he (Jesus) said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.” – Mark‬ ‭2:27-28

‬ ‭ “At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other. Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;” – Matthew‬ ‭12:1-15

‬ ‭ “Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.” – Hebrews‬ ‭4:7-14‬ ‭
